Exploits River Creel Census
ERMA team members conducted a creel census on the main stem of the Exploit’s River during the 2020 summer Atlantic salmon angling season.
Goodyear’s Dam Salmon Transfer
In the spring of 2015 unusually high water and heavy ice on the Exploits River caused a breach in both ends of Goodyear’s Dam rendering its fishways inoperable. As a result, salmon could not utilize the fishways to migrate and access habitat beyond the dam.
Duck Pond Mine Fish Habitat Compensation Program
The Duck Pond Mine Fish Habitat Compensation Program came about in 2005 through loss of productive fish habitat within the Harpoon Brook watershed in central Newfoundland by the approval of a copper-zinc mining project operated by Teck Resources Limited.
Restoration/Enhancement, Education, & Research Work Obstruction Removal
In the mid 1900’s sections of the Exploits River watershed were channelized and dammed to facilitate log driving for the pulp and paper industry. The practice of channelization stopped in 1953, but many of the dams and water control structures remained.
Salmon Reintroduction
From 2012 to 2018 ERMA supplied eggs from Exploits River salmon to reintroduce salmon to the Rennie’s and Virginia River systems in St. John’s. Eggs were shipped to St. John’s, where they were fertilized and transplanted in instream incubators within the Rennie’s River and Virginia River systems.
