Overview

The Exploits River is the longest and largest river on the island of Newfoundland that today boosts a healthy wild Atlantic salmon population. Located on this mighty river at the “Grand Falls” is one of the most impressive salmon enhancement projects in North America whose story is revealed at the Salmonid Interpretation Centre.

The highlight of your visit is seeing the “King of Fish” in its natural environment as they jump the speciality constructed salmon ladder fishway system to migrate upstream to reach spawning habitat. If you prefer to get ‘up-close’ with an underground river experience visit our lower-level underwater observation area. Our knowledgeable and passionate team members are also on hand to enhance your visit with information and education for a ‘fish-tabulous” experience.

Discover and see first-hand why the Atlantic salmon
has been dubbed the ‘king of fish”.

Upon arriving you will appreciate the distinctive vistas of the Exploits River along with the landscaping around our site that showcases local wildflowers and shrubs. There is also a roadway for visitors with limited accessibility to disembark directly from their vehicle to the Salmonid Interpretation Centre pathway entrance.

We recommend starting your visit in our theatre watching a short introductory video on the development of the Grand Falls fishway on the Exploits River and our Association that was and is still very committed to the conservation of wild Atlantic salmon.

New to the Centre is a local exhibit by the Central Newfoundland Visual Arts Society (CNVAS) that is annually curated and themed to showcase Atlantic salmon, Grand Falls, the Exploits River, freshwater species, Indigenous culture and the Central valley area.

The highlight of the Centre is the lower observation level where you enter into an underwater river experience to view the “King of Fish” up close as it migrates upstream to its spawning habitat. Additionally, this lower level also hosts aquariums with Brook Trout, Sticklebacks, and live toads.

We recommend planning two-three hours for exploring and discovering the fascinating world of wild Atlantic salmon. Top it off with dropping in to our gift shop to purchase locally made souvenirs to remember your visit or purchase an ice cream for the kids. Our gift shop is newly stocked with lots of locally crafted ‘fish’ themed items that make great gifts for fisherpeople, craftspeople or that special loved one living away.
